Think ‘fire under the ice’. An image cannot get more surreal. It is the confluence of the opposite; the yin and the yang. This is what came to Tara Premsingh’s mind when she was given the topic ‘fire under the ice’ at the Tahiti Pearls Trophy 2006, one of the prestigious awards given to jewellery designers annually. Tara worked wonders with Tahiti pearls that come in mind-blowing colours. Her ‘Melting Fury’ won the first prize at the awards.
Ganjam held an event at Leela Galleria to showcase the latest collection of Tahitian pearl jewellery designed by Tara. Tara, who has been working as a designer for Ganjam for the past four years, says the latest collection is Ganjam’s take on Tahitian pearl jewellery. “The collection is deigned keeping in mind the huge back Tahiti pearls have made in the market. Pearls are no more about tradition but are very contemporary now. A style not just Indian and is ramp-friendly as well as market-friendly,” Tara says.
About her designs, Tara says when the topic ‘fire under the ice’ was given to her, she thought about the reasoning behind it. It occurred to her as the synergy of the two opposites, rather than one being completely different from the other. “I thought it to be a very dream-like image. Instead of seeing fire and ice as two entirely different entities, I brought them together in mind and reproduced this synergy with the pearls,” she says.
