There may be no ceasefire by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir during the ongoing month of Ramzan.
A number of mainstream parties in the state including PDP, National Conference (NC) and CPI (M) had raised the demand. Even the United Jehad Council (UJC), a joint platform of PoK militant groups, had recently stated that it would consider the truce if a sincere offer was made by any responsible quarter. Its chief Syed Sallah-u-Din had ruled out a unilateral ceasefire by militants.
Following pressure by mainstream parties, senior officers of security and intelligence agencies and police held a high level meeting and discussed the issue. They decided that a ceasefire would not be a positive step as considerable pressure had been mounted upon militants, who were on the run. The officers felt that relaxation to ultras would further deteriorate the situation.
It may be recalled here that the former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had announced a unilateral ceasefire during Ramzan in 2000. Even as the ceasefire was extended later several times, it was finally withdrawn due to the cold response by militants.
