The VCs of various health universities emphasised the need to have common goals for pursuance of the national health policy in universities and cater to the needs of healthcare through health science education.
Rajiv Gandhi University for Health Sciences (RGUHS) Vice-Chancellor P S Prabhakaran is the chairman of the consortium and all VCs its founder-members. The office and secretariat of the consortium will be at RGUHS, Bangalore. The 13 universities which are part of the consortium are: RGUHS, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Science University, (Nagpur) Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, (Thiruvananthapuram) Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, (Punjab) Dr MGR University, (Tamil Nadu) Rajasthan University of Health Sciences, (Rajasthan) NTR University of Health Science, (Andhra Pradesh) Sri Ramachandra University, (Tamil Nadu) Dr D Y Patil University, (Maharashtra) Gujarat Ayurveda University, (Gujarat) KLE University, (Karnataka) Sri Venkateshwara Institute of Medical Sciences, (Andhra Pradesh) and NIMHANS, (Karnataka).
Various activities, including students’ assessment, changes in curriculum, teacher training, faculty development programmes and educational research will be taken up under the consortium. A sub-committee will be formed to look into these activities. “In many health universities, examinations are held simultaneously resulting in overlapping of dates for both practical and theory examinations. The consortium will work out different methods to avoid such overlapping.”
