While Naronkar has been charged with assaulting a woman with an intention to outrage her modest, the principal was charged with abetting the offence.
Naronkar, a history lecturer, is alleged to have assaulted his colleague Shivaganga Rumma, a Kannada lecturer, in the presence of the principal besides abusing her in derogatory language and holding a criminal threat against her.
Trouble started when Naronkar intervened when Shivaganga and Avaradi were engaged in heated exchange of words over the submission of a project report assisted by the UGC.
Based on the complaint of Shivaganga, the University Police have arrested both the principal and the lecturer. Police have charged Naronkar under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (criminal force on woman with an intent to outrage her modesty), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code. The principal has been charged under section 114 of IPC (abetment of crime). Soon after the incident, the teaching staff and students held a demonstration in protest against the incident.
The protesters complained that Naronkar with the support of the principal has been doing goondagiri in the college and was vitiating the academic atmosphere.
MLC Shahshil Namoshi who visited the college condemned the behaviour of the lecturer and the principal and said he would talk to the education minister asking him to take suitable action against the two.Additional SP M N Nagaraj, DySP S S Nayak and senior officials of the education department visited the college.
