The baby was about to be consumed by the canine when a nurse managed to save her from the animal’s clutches.
Though the newly born is stated to be safe, she has been shifted to Sriram Chandra Bhanja (SCB) medical college and hospital, a better government run health centre located in Cuttack town.
Multiple injuries
“As the girl had received multiple dog bite injuries we decided to shift her to Cuttack”, Dr Sukadev Mohanty, the doctor in-charge of Anandapur sub-divisional hospital told Deccan Herald on Tuesday.
According to Dr Mohanty, the baby’s mother, Babi Das, wife of Kailash Das of a village near Anandapur was holding the baby on her lap and waiting for her husband after a normal delivery when the stray dog entered the women’s ward and snatched the new born away from her.
Kailash had gone outside to hire a vehicle to go home along with his newly born daughter and wife.
The shocking incident has once again exposed the sorry state of affairs not only in government run primary health centres in the villages but also in district and sub-division level hospitals in the state.
