Remember those days when you had great dreams of what you would like to become? Perhaps you dreamt of soaring in the sky, or winning the hearts of millions on stage or TV. Maybe you have been a creative person, or one who wanted to transform the world with your technological skills.
If those dreams are still with you when you finish school or college, it shows that you are persevering and that you have nurtured your dreams. If your grades and the courses you are studying are taking you closer to your goals, you can give yourself a pat on the back. But what if they are not? Your dreams may start fading if:
You are not being able to get good grades that will see you through
You could not get admission in a course or college of your choice
You are confused how you should chart out your career path
You feel that the studies that are required to take you to your goal, are too tough
If you allow your dreams to crumble and settle for some other career just because it has “scope” or someone else is pressurising you to do it, you may regret the rest of your life. Before you start losing confidence, explore all possible alternatives, such as
Take a break from studies and get work experience in the field of your choice (even if it is a very low paid job, it should give you exposure to the type of work you would like to do in future).
Look for opportunities where you can earn and study together (an excellent path is joining the armed forces, where you can start as an officer or even as a NCO and then keep acquiring higher qualifications in any field).
Look for alternatives within the same field e.g. diploma instead of degree in engineering, AMIE (which does not require attendance) instead of B.E.
Take up allied courses in the same field (e.g. instead of MBBS, you can do homeopathy, nursing, pharmacy, paramedical courses, veterinary science)
Get into the industry of your dreams through some other branch (e.g. if you cannot qualify as an automobile engineer, you can enter the automobile industry in marketing, finance, design, customer support, etc.)
