Kannada Sahitya Parishath, Bangalore in association with Dakshina Kannada Zilla Sahitya Parishath, Mangalore and Regional Resources Centre for Folk Performing Arts, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi organised a function to give away the Srimathi Thayamma S C Mallayya Folk Artist Award to award winner renowned folk artist Kargi Shedthi at MGM College, Udupi on Wednesday
Speaking at the function, Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahitya Parishath President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura said “Tulunadu which comprises of entire undivided Dakshina Kannada reflects diverse traditional culture which is unique and precious in every sense. Globalisation has emerged as a great threat to this ancient culture. He called upon the people to be more responsible towards protecting and preserving this culture for future generations.”
Mangalore University Kannada department Professor Dr Chinnappa Gowda opined Government and government owned educational institutions should come forward to protect these folk arts from declining. He called undivided Dakshina Kannada as ‘Mecca of folkloric.’ He lauded Regional Resources centre(RRC) for their contributions towards protecting the folk arts and artists.
Awardee Kargi Shedthi is a multi talented folk artist and has the proud of reciting the Siri epic for non stop 18 hours. MGM College Principal Dr Jayaprakash Mavinkuli and Director RRC Prof H Krishna Bhat were present at the function.
