Karnataka on Wednesday made it known that it is opposed to sting operations on television news channels saying that through this, channels were “subjecting innocent people to blackmail and character assassination”.
An official release of the Karnataka government said the government has asked the Centre to put an end to glorification of crime, violence and vulgarity in the electronic media through stringent laws.
These were stated by Karnataka information secretary I M Vittal Murthy and commissioner K V R Tagore at the state Information and Cinematography ministers’ conference here on Wednesday.
The two senior officials also demanded an exclusive national television channel for the promotion of travel, tourism and culture in the country. The State also demanded that there should be a separate national channel to beam developmental activities of the states.
They also sought exemption of telecast fee for telecasting state government programmes on Doordarshan.
