In front of his home crowd, the unseeded 14-year-old toyed with his much higher-ranked opponent to win his maiden ATF title in just under 45 minutes. “I enjoyed my win here. It was great to win the title in Bangalore,” said Gowda.
Hoang took the first game of the match, but that was the lone bright spot for the Vietnamese. On the other hand Gowda, who started positively with an ace, struggled to maintain that momentum going in his first service game as Hoang took the game to deuce. However, Gowda soon settled into a nice rhythm to break his opponent in the third, fifth and seventh games of the first set.
A quarterfinalist here last year, Gowda served well and made full use of Hoang’s largesse. The Vietnamese made more unforced errors than winners to meekly surrender the second set without winning a single game.
Earlier, in all-Indian final, top-seeded Tarrunnam Handa defeated Rimpledeep Kaur 6-4, 6-2 to claim the girls’ title.
The Asian number two continued her good run of form to lift her fifth consecutive ATF title this year. The Delhiite had earlier triumphed in the ATF events in Jordan, Syria and had a couple of victories in Sri Lanka before this success.
Rimpledeep effectively countered Tarrunnam’s baseline play but dropped the ninth game to give away the first set. It was easy for the Delhiite from then as she easily took the second set as well.
