Evams new Python sketches
Reema Moudgil

There is no logic in humour or is there any? Can laughter be triggered by unlikely things like verbosity, feigned dumbness and departed parrots? If you are familiar with the zany, original and crafty sense of humour behind the rip-roaringly successful Monty Python bandwagon, you will know that laughter can be evoked and thoughts provoked all at once.

The name Monty Python or The Pythons collectively describes the creators of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, a British television comedy sketch show that institutionalised (on Television, stage and in films) deliciously wicked twists of phrase, convoluted verbal sparring, inspired insanity and actors who said the most hilarious lines with utmost normalcy.

Chennai’s feted theatre group Evam, has inherited the same comedy genes and a sense of kinship with humour that is typically British but also universal in it’s appeal. They are not just a bunch of actors who walk and talk funny. They make sure that you feel the sense of fun they exude while putting up Python sketches on stage. They were in Bangalore this July to stage 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,' a collection of Python nuggets peppered with music, multi-media features and enthusiastic dancing.

They are now coming back with ‘And Now for Something Completely Different,’ a fresh bundle of Python offerings that the audience will unravel over 80 minutes. It’s also a significant play because Evam has just turned four-years-old and this show celebrates the passion for life and theatre that they have imbued their brand with. It can be watched as a sequel to 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' or as a complete entertainment package on its own.

Evam regulars will remember Karthik Kumar, Sunill Vishnu K and Karthik Srinivasan creating unforgettable characters in earlier Python sketches and the three are back with Sarvesh Sridhar, Navin Balachandran, Sundar R, Karuna Amarnath and their team of young dancers.

The play will have two shows on Sunday, September 23 at 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm at the Chowdiah Memorial Hall. The tickets are priced at Rs 500, 250 and 100. Tickets can be blocked online at www.evam.in. Tickets also available for sale at Landmark and Crossword. For details contact 99162-14062 or 0-98402-22363.
