Named among the top universities of the country, Mysore University has carved a niche for itself in the academic ambit. But, when it comes to sports, an absolute neccessity for all-round personality development, the varsity doesn’t seem to care much as it has not organised any inter-varsity sports event since 2002 for want of facilities.
“More than 70-80 universities participate in the South Zone inter-university games and the number increases during All India inter-university events. Nearly 2000 students participate in the sports events, and providing accommodation for them has become a major problem.
There is no place except Nanjaraja Bahadur Hall for them to stay when the games are on,” says one of the members in the Physical Education Department of the University.
Sportspersons are generally at the receiving end when it comes to the accomodation at sports meet, especially with regard to hygiene.
Students from other universties coming to Mysore certainly will have expectations regarding the standard of accomodation here and therein lies the hitch.
City colleges has limited facilities to meet the requirements of the players. Besides, the officials accompanying them demand separate accommodation.
With most of the officials seeking to stay at hotels, financial crunch creeps in.
The University owns able technical staff in sports and once the accomodation worries are sorted out, it can well play host to inter-univsersity competitions.
