Nehru discounts talk of “crisis”
NEW DELHI, Sept 1
Prime Minister Nehru is understood to have told the All-India Congress Committee today that the country should be determined to make a success of the Second Five-Year Plan despite any difficulties.
People should not feel shy of admitting that the country was poor, and required assistance from wherever it could come but “ultimately success depends on our own resources.”
No removal of Britishers’ statues in Corpn. area
BANGALORE, Sept 1
There was no proposal at present to remove the statues and memories of British nationals situated in the Corporation limits and replace them by Indian freedom fighters, the Deputy Mayor Mr Krishna Rao Pawar said yesterday.
He was replying to a question by Mr K L Ramakrishna Rao at the Bangalore’s Municipal Corporation meeting. Mr Rao was told that there were 12 statues and memories, of which seven were those of British nationals.

Over 1,000 perish in Orissa floods
New Delhi, September 1
Over one thousand people are feared to have been killed in the eight coastal districts of Orissa ravaged by the worst floods in living memory according to reports received in Bhubaneswar.
An official report received at the State Headquarters from Cuttack said about 2,000 cattle were washed away and an estimated ten million people in seven out of thirteen districts were affected.
