ANECDOTES FROM APNA AASMAAN

*In the film Apna Asmaan, towards the end of the shoot, Shobana’s clothes posed as a problem - they were all a wee bit tight. She was upset with the costume designer for not getting her measurements right. Later she accepted that it wasn’t the tailor, but the good food that was to blame.

She claimed that in that one month of shoot she had gained five kilos! However, it wasn’t quite the same story for the rest of the crew. What was considered great food by Shobana wasn’t really pleasing to the others: the food suppliers were changed thrice!

*The maverick scientist Dr Satya was supposed to carry a silver walking stick with a secret chamber inside it to hide his experimental Brain Booster. One day before the shoot, the art director informed the unit that he had failed to create what director Kaushik Roy wanted. As a last resort, a Korean mother-of-pearl box was brought from Kaushik’s house to save the situation.

*There was an initial tussle between director Kaushik Roy and Anupam Kher on the sets of Apna Asmaan. Dr Satya, an Indian Scientist settled in Mexico, was supposed to wear a white linen suit and a polka-dotted bow tie. Anupam Kher, who played the role of Dr Sathya, refused to wear a bow tie.

His point was that a French beard and a bow tie would make him look like a caricature of his previous negative roles played in different films. The director relented and made him wear a silk tie instead. So it ended happily as a tie between them!

*Sometime in the middle of the post production, Leslie Lewis, the music director, decided to move his recording studio to Pune. He wanted to be with his family. With long schedules, the director had to travel to Pune and back.

This being in the monsoon season became a horror, sometimes trips taking as long as eight hours to reach Pune!

In all this, the surprise would be the delectable spread laid out by Leslie’s wife, Lollette: On the table would be a variety of fish cooked in different ways. The director being a typical Bong and a lover of fish loved the food so much that he stopped complaining about going to Pune.
