Anushka stuns Prarthana
DH News Service, Bangalore:

Unseeded Anushka Bharghava beat top seed Prarthana Thombare 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the third round in the girls section of the Bowring Institute Asian Tennis Federation junior-ranking (U-14) tournament here on Tuesday.

Anushka, undeterred by her opponent’s rank and stature, played within her limitations to send the top seed home. The first set saw a see-saw battle with both of them holding their serve till the seventh game when Anushka got the decisive break which helped her win the set.

Prarthana shed her complacency and came back roaring, racing to a 3-0 lead in the second set. Too many double faults didn’t help Anushka’s cause either.

Anushka, howerver, looked a much better player in the decider with her crisp returns and excellent backhands. It was all over for Prarthana when she double faulted at match point in the ninth game.

In the third round, the Hyderabad girl will take on Bhuvana, who breezed past S P Ritu 6-3, 6-2.

The boy’s section also saw a couple of upsets with Karnataka’s Vinod Gowda packing off third-seeded Rakshay Thakkar 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Vinod’ State-mate and seventh seeded Sharan Patil also advanced to the third round with a facile 6-1, 6-1 win over Rohit Raje.
