Vastrabharana opens this weekend
Over 38 weavers/textile units from 12 states will be participating in this year’s Vastrabharana, beginning September 29 at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Kumara Krupa Road. Organised by the Crafts Council of Karnataka, the exhibition and sale of traditional textiles and jewellery will continue till October 4, between 10.30 am and 7.30 pm. The exhibition will be inaugurated on September 29 at 11 am.
The spotlight this year will be on Molkalmuru silks woven in natural dyed yarn. This is part of an ongoing product development initiative “Nisarga Ranga” (colours of nature) taken by the Crafts Council of Karnataka to revive and introduce natural dyes in the traditional textiles of Karnataka. Molakalmuru sarees are woven by the Sali and Devanga communities, hereditary weavers in Chitradurga district. The unique feature of the Molkalamuru saree is the colour woven into the body and pallav contrasts with the borders.
Karnataka is represented by Ilkals, including a range of natural dyed Ilkal sarees, some with the Chadranchukki checked design, as well as kasuti embroidery. From Tamil Nadu are exquisite Kanjeevarams contrasted by cotton sungadis, cotton–silk blends and polycottons. The rich and prolific textile traditions of Andhra Pradesh find a place in Gadwals, Uppadas, Ikats, Teliyas, Mangalgiris, khadis, painted and printed Kalamkaris. Paithanis from Maharashtra, Chanderis, Maheshwaris and Madhubani painted sarees from Madhya Pradesh as well as textiles of Gujarat — the Patolas, Bandhnis and Aashavallis will be on sale. Bengal and Bangladesh are represented by Jamdanis, kantha embroidery and Daccais. Cotton textile lovers also can choose from Kora, Kotah and mulmul cottons. Also featured are embroidered cholis.
