Dakshina Kannada registered 66.51 per cent polling during the elections held for the seven Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of the district on Friday.
The polling went on peacefully without registering any untoward incident across the district. Even the rains turned favourable on Friday making way for uninterrupted polling. There were a total of 4,59,556 voters in the 189 wards of the district, out of whom only 66.51 per cent electorate turned up in the polling booths.
Giving details of the elections to Deccan Herald, Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao, who is also the election officer for the district, said the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) recorded 60 per cent polling.
In fact, compared to the other ULBs of Dakshina Kannada, it was MCC that registered lowest percentages in the district. There are 3,21,570 voters from 60 wards under the city corporation limits.
Bantwal Town Municipal Council witnessed 72.6 per cent polling, which is the highest percentage in the entire district.
Meanwhile, Ullal Town Municipal Council registered 63.5 per cent of total polling. It has 37,526 electorate from 27 wards.
Polling percentage reached 64.5 per cent in Mudabidri Town Municipal Council.
Puttur Town Municipal Council recorded 65 per cent. Besides, Sullia Town Panchayat recorded 72 per cent polling and in Belthangady Town Panchayat, it was 68 per cent.
Police had kept a tight vigil in all polling booth limits, particularly in the sensitive and hyper sensitive areas. Out of the 567 polling booths, 146 were hyper sensitive while 235 booths have been considered as sensitive. Police mobile squads, DAR platoons, KSRP platoons and Home Guard personnel had been deployed as part of security measures.
Now the fate of 556 candidates of the seven urban local bodies of the district, including 224 of the Mangalore City Corporation has been sealed in the ballot boxes. The counting will start at 8 am on September 30.
