A team of doctors from Fr Muller Medical College Hospital in Mangalore have granted a new lease of life to a two months old infant suffering from cardiac disorder by performing a very rare and unique procedure.
According to a press release, the infant, hailing from Kannur district of Kerala, was admitted to the hospital recently in a very critical condition with breathing complications and feeding problems.
Chief Interventional Cardiologist Dr H Prabhakar on detailed clinical examination detected multiple holes in the heart of the child which is defective by birth. Though the infant required immediate Medical attention, an open heart surgery was of high risk.
The team of doctors led by Dr Prabhakar and assisted by Cardiologist Dr Anil, Dr Sayyed, Peadiatrician Dr Habeeb and Aneasthesiologist Dr Subramanya passed multiple coils through an artery in the thigh of the child thereby closing the multiple holes. The entire procedure lasted only 45 minutes.
Institution Administrator Fr Dennis D’Sa in the release, revealed that this type of procedure performing on the infant is very risky, moreover it requires high level of skill, expertise, and technique. The child is responding to the treatment and reported to be normal awaiting discharge from the hospital.
