The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, on a report which alleged that doctors in the hospital operated on a patient's wrong eye.
The AIIMS director has been asked to send a factual report within four weeks.
The commission took suo-motu cognisance of a news report published in an English daily on September 24. It called it a serious issue of violation of human rights of the patient.
As per the report, a 76 year old woman suffering from cataract was operated upon on September 20, at Rajendra Prasad Centre of the hospital. The report further said that doctors operated her in the wrong eye due to negligence.
The NHRC also took notice of a report which appeared in a Hindi daily on September 24, on the detention and torture of two girls at a police station in West Delhi. As per report, a 17 year old girl along with her younger sister were taken to the police station and detained for five hours where they were disrobed and subjected to severe physical torture.
Calling the report as distressing, the NHRC directed that a copy of the press report be sent to the Police Commissioner, Delhi, for a factual report within four weeks.
