Mayur J Mohit and Anushka Bhargava won the boys and girls titles respectively in the Asian Tennis Federation junior-ranking (U-14) tournament which concluded at the Bowring Institute here on Friday.
Second seed Mayur upset the top-seed Rohit in the boys section denying the latter a double. Rohit and his brother Ronit had teamed up to beat Digvijay Singh and R Ramkumar 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 for the doubles title.
It was the third ATF title for the Mayur — a ninth standard student from SP High School in Chennai. Rohit was let down by his poor serves in both the sets — a fact which he later acknowledged at the end of the game, while Mayur’s crisp forehands returns gave him the cutting edge in his 6-4, 6-4 victory.
One-sided
The girls’ final was rather a one-sided affair with Anushka crushing Sowjanya 6-3, 6-2 in an all-Hyderabadi final that never rose above the mediocre. Earlier, the two had teamed to stage a comeback and win the doubles final defeating VKC Vishesh and Ali Sajjad Zainar 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 10-4. Anushka and Sowjanya lost the first set and were trailing 0-3 before staging a stunning comeback.
“Obviously the doubles final was tougher. But I cherish the singles victory more since, it is my first ATF title,” said Anushka, an eighth standard student of HP High School Hyderabad, who trains under her father Praveen Bhargava.
