Brisk voting was recorded right from the early hours, with voter turnout recorded at 73 per cent. Ward One recorded the highest 91 percent turnout, while Ward 11 recorded a paltry 50 per cent.
Voters had stood in queue to vote right from 6.30 am in certain wards. But polling in Government Pre University College for Women, the polling centre for Wards seven, eight and nine witnessed some heated arguements between workers of the JD (S) and the Congress, over alleged forgery by the JD (S) candidate.
Injury
This was followed by a clash, which injured the JD (S) candidate. The police had to resort to lathicharge to bring the crowd under control.
Around 12 noon, tension flared up between activists of both the parties, which necessitated some more lathi charge by the police, who then beefed up security arrangements.
In GKBMS School, the polling centre for Wards 11,12 and 13 BJP leader Suresh Gowda took exception to the presence of unauthorised persons inside the polling booths. He entered into a heated discussion with officials.
At this juncture, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer S R Umashankar and Superintendant of Police P Harishekharan visited the booth and Mr Gowda apprised the officials about the situation.
Congress leader Ashok and JD (S) leader D Krishnakumar were also present.
The DC and the SP checked the polling booth and instructed officials not to allow unauthorised persons.
Death
They also got the booth agents to switch off their cellphones. Congress and JD (S) leaders toured each polling booth to ensure there was no proxy voting.
In Ward 23, Independent candidate Ramesh had to cast his vote early and then proceed towards his residence to perform the last rites of his mother Boramma (75), who passed away early in the morning.
