V Chikkaveeraiah, a poet with modern sensibilities is no more.
The 77-year-old poet, popular among readers as Veechi, was ailing for some time.
He leaves behind wife Muttamma, three daughters and two sons.
Born in Ameenuddin Sabpalya near Tumkur on November 5, 1930, Veechi had to face poverty and illiteracy side by side.
Variety in roles
However, a multi-faceted talent, Veechi could complete matriculation.
But his life was a series of rich experiences.
An agriculturist, social worker and a personality who entered politics with the sole intention of improving conditions in the society, Veechi enriched Tumkur society.
Veechi’s first compilation of poems was Pranaya Chaitra. Vishaada Nakshe, Sankara Tali, Navila Mane, Abhinayada Bayalu, Nitya Maduvanagitti, Mahayana, Hasivina Loka, Hidi Shaapa and Bantendaroo Iddudiddeyittu are his other compilations.
Siddara Betta, Ivaru Nannavaru, Nechchinavaru and Ishtamitraru are Veechi’s major works in prose.
Public mattered
Recipient of many awards including Karnataka Sahitya Academy award, Veechi however treasured public affection more.
Veechi’s public service as the president of Tumkur CMC between 1971 and 1973 is remembered by many.
A simple man, Veechi used to ride to the municipal council in a bicycle, always ready to mingle with people and respond to their problems.
As many old-timers recall, a highly appreciative public used to look after his election expenses and ensure that he won each one of them.
Clean administration
Veechi, on his part, tried to bring in transparency to the functioning of the council.
He also took up several developmental works, not bowing to any pressure. Along with clean administration, Veechi also contributed to enrich the city’s cultural landscape.
Many stalwarts of the Kannada literary world, including Da Ra Bendre, Dr Kota Shivarama Karant and Devanur Mahadev visited Tumkur at Veechi’s invitation.
The enthusiastic poet had also distributed numerous copies of Devanur’s Kusumabale for free when it was published.
In 1978, Veechi contested the Assembly election with the support of the CPM, but had to face defeat. Yet, the poet was not fazed and continued to lead an enriched life.
With Veechi’s death, a major link to the Kannada cultural world has been lost forever.
