Call it an abnormal case of a kid’s corpulence or malaise, but it poses a challenge to medical science.
A three and half year old child residing at Dhanbad in Jharkhand, Gaurav Chatterjee, has virtually earned the epithet of Bhim, mythological hero of Mahabharata. The reason? He is around four feet in height and weighs approximately 52 kg.
Madhumita Chatterjee, Gaurav’s mother, says, “Gaurav has always been described as an abnormal baby by the doctors. I was stunned to see my baby weighing eight kilograms when he was born.” Later, she also found his food requirement abnormal. She has been running from pillar to post, trying to raise funds for her child’s treatment.
Doctors have advised her to keep him on liquid diet. An employee of Mineral Area Development Authority (MADA), Dhanbad, Madhumita Chatterjee, has been virtually pushed to the wall by the medical expenses and food requirement of her child.
“I have to arrange for a litre of milk for my son besides a litre of fruit juice every day.
“This apart, he is undergoing regular medical treatment. I am managing all these somehow, as I get a paltry amount from MADA as my salary,” said Mrs Chatterjee, who also reportedly works as a maid in some houses to make ends meet.
When contacted, doctors attached to a Dhanbad based government hospital described it as a rare case.
“The abnormal weight could be due to hormonal imbalances in the body. Earlier, he was suspected to be suffering from Myxaedema, but the medical examination has yielded negative results.
“We have now recommended some other tests, which include T3, T4 and TSH,” said Dr I P Gupta.
However, Gaurav is quite happy the way he is. “I don’t feel any problem, as my physical appearance has made me a recognisable face in the locality,” says the innocent child.
