Speaking to media persons, in Bangalore, on Saturday, after a meeting with the officials of health, law and education departments, Mr Basavaraj Horatti said a government order to this effect would be issued shortly. The ban would also cover the teaching faculty. “Earlier we wanted to restrict the ban to students below 16 years. But, there is a difficulty in enforcing the order. So, now, the ban will be applicable to all students up to PUC level irrespective of their age”, he stated.
This measure comes in the wake of several studies, which pointed out the adverse effect of radiation from mobile phones on the IQ level of children. “The draft rules are being framed at present.
The head masters will be held responsible if any lapse is noticed in enforcing the law. The head masters will also be authorised to seize the mobile hand sets”, he added. Mr Horatti said following the announcement of government’s decision, many mobile companies tried to bring pressure on the government, but the latter did not yield.
A study done by the government has shown that 30-40 per cent of students use cell phones in colleges.
He said that in view of delay in finalising the appointment of lecturers by KPSC, the government has decided to hire the services of retired teachers .
The KPSC which so far has completed the appointment of 475 lecturers, has assured of finalising the appointment of1760 lecturers by April 2008.
