The 'Pondi' beach and its environs
A Deva Raju describes the monuments situated on Beach Road of Pondicherry.

Watching a beach is always a stimulating and invigorating experience. It is also a shaking and shocking experience to see the waves coming across, in a ferocious way.  It is even lovelier to see nature’s beauty during evenings, especially at the time of a sunset.

There are two monuments of historical significance on the beach in Pondicherry. One is a four-metre tall statue of Mahatma Gandhi and the other is the War Memorial, built by the French in commemoration of the soldiers who died in World World War I.

The statue of Mahatma Gandhi, which is standing on the banks of the beach, is a centre of attraction for all those who come to the beach. The pillars that are surrounded the statue have some fine and pleasant carvings.

Apart from these, the Light House, which stands 29 metres high, is another monument of over 150 years old.

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, which is a spiritual centre of international repute, is also located near the Beach Road.
=It is astonishing to see innumerable people throng this Ashram every day, both in the morning as well as in the evening, to attain peace of mind by praying at the Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo, which is inside the Ashram.

Many people sit silently around the Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo, who was a great philosopher and spiritual master, to gain peace of mind.

There is another Samadhi of the Mother, whose valuable sayings are still lingering in the ears of the people at large, a bit inside the Ashram.

This Ashram was established in 1926 to promote spiritual teachings on yoga and modern science, by Sri Aurobindo and a French woman, The Mother, who accepted Aurobindo as her spiritual mentor and guide and later became his most important disciple. People from all over the world come to the Ashram to partake in the teachings in order to enrich their lives.

In the same vicinity, there is a fascinating spot to be seen. It is a big and beautiful park named after freedom fighter Subramanya Bharati. There is an attractive monument that lies in the centre of the Park, which is called Ayai Mandapam, which was named in honour of courtesan Aayi in whose name there is a tank. In this elegant and extended park, people of all age groups enjoy their leisure time happily.
