Dance has a dimension beyond the physical—this statement was proved by the students of Shiamak Davar's Institute for The Performing Arts or SDIPA through a high energy show called Confi-Dance, a dance fiesta held at Ambedkar Bhavan.
Shiamak’s Special Potential Batch (SPB) and Shiamak’s Show Kids, who made up the cast, showcased various popular dance forms, combining talent and sheer hard work with energy and entertainment. They mesmerised the audience with their enthralling movements and overwhelming dance spirits.
The SPB consists of talented students selected from regular SDIPA classes who are training to become professional dancers. Shiamak’s Show Kids, between the ages of 7 and 11, are selected from the junior SDIPA classes.
Various popular dance forms performed in the show included — Jazz, Hip Hop (DJing, MCing, graffiti art and break dancing), Rock and Roll (a straining high-energy performance parallel with the musical genre of rock and roll), Salsa, Shiamak's Indo-Jazz (western jazz movements with Indian folk elements) and Bollywood Jazz (choreographed by Shiamak in Bollywood).
The last category had the highest whistles and applause from the audience, who were more tuned to seeing a variety of Bollywood dances on TV and films. Apart some numbers from movies like Aawarapan, Partner and Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom some hip hop and rap songs were also performed in the show.
Shiamak Davar started his dance school — Shiamak Davar's Institute for The Performing Arts (SDIPA) — in 1986. The main motive behind this institute is to help young and young-at-heart discover creative expression through dance. Now it has dance classes in nine cities in India and three centers abroad and reaches out to over 4,000 students.
Shiamak Davar has done many an award winning work in blockbusters like Dhoom 2, Taal, Dil To Pagal Hai, Bunty aur Babli, Kisna, etc.
