Come alive at J P Park
A Deva Raju

The Jayaprakash Narayan Park, popularly known as J P Park, developed by BBMP in Mathikere, is probably the biggest not only in Bangalore, but also the State.

Though the foundation stone was laid by Ramakrishna Hegde during his tenure as Chief Minister, the actual work started after a gap of some years.  It took more than a decade for the park to be thrown open to the public.

Though the work in some parts of the park is still in progress, the rest of the place is well-developed and well-organised and dedicated to cater to various kinds of people.

The park is spread over an area of nearly 100 acres of land with beautiful lawn, entrance plaza, central spine, jogging track, nursery and a pavilion. The moment one lands at Chowdeshwari Bus Stop in Mathikere, one will be delighted to see this gigantic park.

The wide entrance of the park attracts the attention of innumerable commuters and passers-by all through the day.   Inside the park a number of sculptures have been created - oxen, a woman with children, a villager with cows and buffalo, lions, tigers, deer and monkeys.

These are made out of concrete and their appearance are so bright and elegant that any new entrant will get a feeling that these statues are for real.

There are paved walkways along the park and brightly coloured lights embellish the park during evenings. There is a rock garden within the park with attractive and decorative stones of various sizes. There is a dedicated children’s play area with equipment.

There is also a big and spacious playground for the young and energetic youth to play team games like football, cricket and badminton. This ground is not inside the park but adjacent to it.

The J P Park is a boon for the people of surrounding areas like Mathikere, Yeshwanthapur, Muthyalanagara, Jalahalli and Gokula. It is also on the agenda to develop the park by installing sculptures of some more animals like elephants, camels and bear besides and amphitheatre and musical fountain in the park.

People who wish to see this big and beautiful park can reach this park from any part of the City easily since there are more number of BMTC Buses are available from places like

Majestic, City Mark and Shivajinagar. One can get down at Mathikere Bus Stop and take a small walk to reach the park or at Chowdeshwari Bus Stop, which is adjacent to this park.
