Surinder stars in Indian win
Surinder Kaur struck four goals in a row as defending champions India outplayed Malaysia 6-0 to start their campaign in style at the women’s Asia Cup hockey tournament in Hong Kong on Sunday, reports PTI.
In the one-sided Pool A encounter at the King’s Park Hockey Ground, India proved too strong for their 24th-ranked rivals.
Deepika Thakur opened the scoring for the 13th-ranked Indians. Later, Jasjeet Kaur sounded the board once and Surinder then took over to seal the win for her side. India will take on Thailand on Monday.
Jeev tied 15th, Kapur falters
Done in by a bogey treble in his front nine, Jeev Milkha Singh slipped to tied 15th place after his penultimate round of one-over 74 in the Johnnie Walker Championship golf tournament, reports PTI from Gleneeagles, Scotland.
Jeev’s round of 74 took his three-day tally to four-under 209 while compatriot Shiv Kapur’s stuttered to three-over 76 and slipped 22 places to the 38th spot.
At the top of the table, England’s Simon Wakefield chipped in at the last hole to grab a share of the third round lead alongside Swede Frederik Andersson Hed.
Sachin is Man U Opus ambassador
Sachin Tendulkar has been appointed ambassador for the Manchester United Opus in India and the publishers are planning a similar epic about the Indian batting great, reports PTI from Manchester.
Tendulkar, who was the guest of honour at the Premier League match between Manchester United and Sunderland, has been named Indian ambassador for the voluminous hardback epic about the club - and he revealed that the publishers, Kraken, are planning a similar book on Tendulkar.
“They’re really doing their homework. It’s wonderful to be part of this and I’m looking forward to it,” said Tendulkar who watched Alex Ferguson’s team beat Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Hall might join ICL bandwagon
South African Andrew Hall is set to join the Indian Cricket League after snapping ties with the national side following his omission from the Twenty 20 squad for the World Championship starting next week, reports PTI from Durban.
It is understood that Hall will join Nicky Boje and Lance Klusener, who were recently named to join the rebel outfit. The all-rounder had submitted a letter to Cricket South Africa on Friday about his international retirement.
Meanwhile, Jacques Kallis, who resigned from vice-captaincy after being dropped from the Twenty20 squad, is to hold another meeting with CSA CEO Gerald Majola on Tuesday about his availability for national duty.
Bowling won’t be affected: Pathan
Pacer Irfan Pathan on Sunday said his emphasis on improving batting would not adversely affect his bo-wling. “I consider batting as my plus point and shall continue to strive to become a good all-rounder,” he said on the sidelines of a function, reports PTI from Pune.
Pathan also refuted a suggestion that he could no longer bowl an effective swing bowler. The all-rounder, who was ignored for the England tour, said he was raring to go at the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa and was confident of giving a good all-round performance.

Rams Racing’s Ashwin Sundar is virtually assured of the overall championship titles in both the Formula Hyundai and Formula Swift categories having taken unassailable leads in the JK Tyre 2007 National Road Racing championship, reports PTI from Chennai.
Gay targets Olympic encore
Triple World champion Tyson Gay will try to duplicate his golden feat at next year’s Olympics. “I want to do all three,” Gay said on Sunday, a day after winning his third gold medal at the athletics World Championships in Osaka. Gay swept past his rivals to claim the 100 and 200 metres World titles, and ran a tense third leg for the victorious US 4x100M relay team.
