With the inauguration of three Coastal Security Police (CSP) stations for Mangalore, Malpe and Kumta by IGP (Coastal Security Police) G M Hayath in Mangalore on Monday, the long pending demand of the police has been solved. The CSP would be of great help in curtailing anti-national, anti-social, terrorist and underworld activities in the coastal region (500 metres on shore and 24 nautical miles in the sea).
The three police station areas would comprise 11 villages (for Mangalore CSP station), 40 villages (for Malpe CSP station) and 19 villages (for Kumta CSP station), Mr Hayath said.
Two other police stations (in Bhatkal and Karwar) were opened a few months ago, thus taking the total number of Coastal Security police stations to five in the State.
Boats by December
The CSP has sent a proposal for 10 boats to patrol the region and they are expected to get it by December, Mr Hayath said and added that each station will get two boats (12 tonne capacity and 5 tonne capacity each). At present, the CSP is depending on the Coast Guards for boats.
To a query, Mr Hayath said that a number of police personnel will be have been recruited. The remaining non-technical staff will be filled through the police department while retired Coast Guard or retired Navy personnel will be taken to fill the technical staff.
Stating that there is no dearth of funds, Mr Hayath said a sum of Rs 1,23,50,000 has been sanctioned per station besides providing 9 vehicles and four motorcycles for the CSP stations. This apart, each station has been sanctioned a sum of Rs 10 lakh for infrastructure, he added.
