'We don't feel threatened'
DH News Service, Headingley:

Board of Control for Cricket in India Sharad Pawar said that the Board did not feel any threat from the Indian Cricket League.

"We don't see any threat, because what BCCI is doing for cricket, nobody else has been doing like this. We organise under-16, under-19 and Ranji Trophy and some other meets also, so the question doesn't arise.

“Secondly, for the last two years, BCCI was planning to do something like an Indian Premier League. We are absolutely ready," Pawar said.

"The difference between others and our league will be that respective country's board will be associated and we will be able to take a final decision in the next 8-10 days' time.

“We'll announce our own policy that will give tremendous opportunity to present players, newcomers and some of the retired players, and foreign players," he said.

Cricket manager

The Union Agriculture Minister also said the Board was happy with the arrangement of a cricket manager at the helm.

"As of today, our experience with the present team of two coaches -- fielding and bowling – and a senior cricketer like Chandu Borde along with them is delivering good results and we are quite happy with that.

Probably, in the next meeting on September 13 we'll be able to take a decision on bowling and fielding coaches regarding giving them an opportunity to serve on a long-term basis," he said.

‘What’s the aim?’

Pawar also said he did not know the real aim behind the formation of ICL. "I don't know exactly what their desire is, but it's a commercial venture. It's a sort of a private company, they are investors and if anybody wants to earn something by organising these leagues, I don't want to comment because everybody has the right to earn money.

“But the players associated with the BCCI have to choose which way they have to go," he said.

"Like one of the senior players who has joined them told me that it's a good job he's getting. He used the word naukri (job) and if a cricketer is getting a job anywhere, we will be happy."

Pawar also said the BCCI was in the process of identifying a media manager and a decision in that regard would be taken soon.

In the morning, Pawar had a meeting with the players, briefing them about the upcoming Indian Premier Twenty20 League.
