JD (S) workers in women’s panel
Bangalore, dhns: The JD (S) on Monday decided to appoint party workers as members of State Women’s Commission and the Backward Classes Commission. Besides, it has decided to appoint presidents to various district-level urban development authorities.
Three persons who will be appointed as members to the Women’s Commission are: Ambika Jalaher from Bellary, Prabhavathi Jairam from Mandya and Sharada P from Shimoga, according to party sources. The party, however, is still finalising the names of members to be appointed to the Backward Classes Commission and presidents to various urban development authorities.
Sources also said that the party would not take up appointment to various other boards and corporations, as it was a laborious process. “It is a time-consuming process. The model code of conduct for the local body elections is expected to be announced on Tuesday. Hence, the party is not taking it up,” the sources added.
Jayadeva plans four more units
Shimoga, dhns: Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has announced that units of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology will be set up at all the four divisions of the State.
Speaking after inaugurating Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences in the City on Monday, he said, the State government will ensure availability of advanced medical care for poor and the needy.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa announced that interest on the due amount of Self Assessment Scheme will be waived-off if people pay the tax within three months.
Ministers K S Eshwarappa, Dr V S Acharya and R Ashok were present in the programme.
Three more CSP stations opened
Mangalore, dhns: With the inauguration of three Coastal Security Police (CSP) stations for Mangalore, Malpe and Kumta by IGP (Coastal Security Police) G M Hayath in Mangalore on Monday, the total number of Coastal Security police stations have gone up to five in the State. Two other police stations (in Bhatkal and Karwar) were opened a few months ago.
All the five police stations are running in temporary or hired buildings and the CSP will have their own buildings by April next, Mr Hayath said and added that the CSP has sent a proposal for 10 boats to patrol the region and they are expected to get it by December. Each station will get two boats (12 tonne capacity and 5 tonne capacity each). At present, the CSP is depending on the Coast Guards for boats. IGP (Western Range) A M Prasad, SP (DK) Satish Kumar, SP (CSP, Udupi) V B Kittale, DySP Mithra Heraje and others were present.
Chennamma statue to be unveiled
Bangalore, dhns: The statue of the first woman freedom fighter and queen of Kittur, Rani Chennamma is expected to be unveiled by President Pratibha Patil on September 11 at the Parliament House in New Delhi.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Dr Mahendra S Kanti, Chairman, Kittur Rani Chennamma Memorial Committee, Belgaum said the statue of the legendary queen had been sculpted in Panchaloha by Vijay Rangarao Gujjar at a cost of Rs 15 lakh.
“Unveiling the statue is a matter of pride for all Kannadigas. The statue of Rani Chennamma at the Parliament House, is the second from the State after Basaveshwara. We will also press for the installation of a statue of Sir M Visveswaraya in the Parliament,” Dr Kanti said.
Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajashekharan, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and Minister for Education Basavaraj S Horatti are some of the leaders, who are expected to attend the ceremony.
Left rallies to protest nuclear deal
Bangalore, dhns: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will organise two protest rallies from Kolkata and Chennai that are expected to culminate at Vishakapatnam, to oppose the Indo-US joint nuclear exercises and the nuclear pact between the two nations.
Briefing reporters on Monday, G N Nagaraj, State Secretary, CPI (M) said the first rally from Kolkata will be flagged off by veteran leader and former chief minister of West Bengal Jyoti Basu and led by A B Bardhan and the second rally will be led by CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat from Chennai.
“Comrades from across the nation will participate in both the processions, to be flagged off on September 4 and to reach Vishakapatnam on September 8,” said Nagaraj.
The CPI (M) has said that the exercises at Vizag would have two US warships with a “notorious” past. The USS Nimitz has taken part in the Iraq war of 2003 and the USS Kittyhawk has taken part in the Vietnam War of the 1960s.
The Kittyhawk was also sent by the US administration in the Bangladesh liberation war to assist Pakistan, Nagaraj added.
The protest is being jointly organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India and the All India Forward Bloc.
