A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed on Monday night by jumping into an ashram well in Kumbalgod.
Asha, the deceased, was a student of Gollahalli Government School and an inmate of Basava Gangotri Ashram, run by Mathe Mahadevi.
Asha’s mother, Gowramma, a native of Devanur village in Chikmagalur district, said her daughter ended her life due to harassment by ashram staff.
Asha was living in the ashram for the past three years. According to sources, she told her mother about the harassment and asked her to take her home. Gowramma promised to take her back after she completed her SSLC.
Ashram authorities dismissed Gowramma’s charges and said Asha used to often complain of stomach ache and that could be reason why she took the extreme step.
In a complaint to Bidadi police, Kasturi, an ashram supervisor, has said depression could have made Asha take this step.
