Kannada Bharati PU College NSS programme officer Sabalam Bhojanna Reddy has won the State-level best NSS officer award.
The award was presented by Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti at an award presentation function organised under the aegis of PU Education Board and NSS at Patil Puttappa Hall in Dharwad.
On the occasion, the best NSS unit award for Kannada Bharati PU College was presented to College Principal S T Purushottam, stated a press release.
PU Education Board Commissioner S G Hegde Joint Director Govardhan, NSS Assistant Advisor Dr H S Suresh and NSS Co-ordinator Nagraj participated in the programme.
6 years service
Mr Bhojanna Reddy has been serving as Kannada lecturer since the last 21 years and considering his service as an NSS officer since the last 6 years and the programmes undertaken as NSS officer, the award was conferred on him.
The social service undertaken through the annual camps apart from the daily activities undertaken by the NSS unit and the cleanliness activities were also the criteria for the selection.
Mr Bhojanna has made afforts to protect ancient monuments, undertake rain water harvesting, establishing energy clubs, utilising solar energy, women’s education, creating awareness on population control, rejuvenating old parks, literacy programmes in tribal areas, constructing toilets through NSS, constructing playgrounds, constructing linking roads in villages, digging compost pits and ensuring a plastic-free surroundings.
Other programmes undertaken by the unit included AIDS awareness programmes and organising lectures. In the annual special camp organised with the co-ordination of the gram panchayat at Nanjarayapattana in 2006-07, the NSS unit assisted in constructing 80 toilets.
Mr Reddy also strived to inculcate discipline, leadership qualities, spirit of citizenship and responsibility, professionalism, team spirit and brotherhood among students through NSS.
In the inter-NSS competition organised at Hampi a year ago, the NSS unit had represented the culture of Kodagu district, the release added.
