Hundreds of protesters resorted to stone-throwing and attacked Keshwapur police station in Hubli after a youth died allegedly while being questioned by the police on Tuesday.
The police had brought Girish Shiggaon (28) to the station for question him on gambling. As the news of the death spread, the mob attacked the station.
A few vehicles were also damaged in the incident and four people, including two policemen, were injured in the incident.
The situation came under control only after Hubli-Dharwad City Police Commissioner Narayan Nadmani promised a Corps of Detectives inquiry into the incident.
Two persons were injured and three jeeps and a motorcycle belonged to Keshwapur Police Station were damaged by the mob.
It is alleged that the police tried to hush up the case by dumping the body in a gutter. But, the local people noticed it and the trouble started.
The police maintain that they had released Girish after giving him a notice.
Mr Nadmani told reporters that deputy commissioner of police (crime and traffic) R Dileep would inquire into the incident and submit a detailed report. He claimed that the doctors have stated that Girish’s body did not have any injury mark.
4 cops suspended
Four constables attached to Keshwapur police station have been suspended pending inquiry in connection with the mysterious death of a youth brought for questioning by police.
