Various pro-Kannada organisations have urged the government to provide taluk status to Sankeshwar.
Kannada Chaluvali Sangha, Karanataka Rajyotsava Samiti, Kannda Balaga and Raitha Sangha have jointly submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister H D Kumarswamy and Revenue Minister Jagadesh Shettar explaining them the need for announcing Sankeshwar as a taluk.
They said that residents of Sankeshwar have to travel a long distance to reach Hukkeri for all the office works. The people in the border area have also forced to go to Hukkeri to get government facilities. If Sankeshwar was made a taluk headquarters, those difficulties would be addressed. Now, people have to visit Hukkeri to get every certificate required for government documentation. But if once Sankeshwar was established as a taluk, people would save time as well as money, the organisation members opined.
Sankeshwar MLA constituency includes four Zilla Panchayat constituencies and 15 Taluk Panchayat constituencies and 65 villages. Sankeshwar is situated beside National Highway number 4. The constituency has one engineering college, polytechnic, homeopathy medical college, pharmacy college, law college apart from other institutions. It also has enough potential to be developed as a taluk and buildings to house government offices, they stated.
