Teacher’s Day celebration was organised in College of Fisheries Mangalore on Wednesday.
The programme was inaugurated by MGM College Udupi Principal Dr Jayaprakash Mavinakuli who said that on the teachers’ day, every teacher must retrospect themselves and ask themselves a question that whether they have been sincere and dedicated to their profession and lived up to the ancient statement of ‘Guru Devobhava’.
He said that fighting for better pay scale is fine as long as the teachers do justice to their nobel profession.
Dr Mavinakuli said that modernisation has invaded every aspect of our lives, not even barring classrooms. In such a scenario, he said that teachers may slowly disappear from clasrooms, just to be replaced by computers.
Commenting on the lifestyle that IT revolution has brought in, he said that entire nature of work has changed and it is completely aganist the law of nature. Owing to work pressure and depression, large number of young people are committing suicide. He said that teachers have a huge role to play here as they must take the take moral responsibilty about what happens to the students.
Chief guest of the programme, Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU)Vice Chancellor Dr R N Sreenivasa Gowda said that it is indeed unfortunate that young people are hesitating to take up teaching profession and hence there are is a shortage of teachers.
Citing example of the recent incidents that occured in Mandya and New Delhi, he said that such instances have marred the glory of teaching profession and called upon the teachers to imbibe high moral standards in their lives.
“Curiosity, creativity, communication, character, courage, conviction, competency, charisma and common sense are the 9 Cs that a teacher must compulsorily possess,” he added.
College of Fisheries Dean Dr P Keshavanath presided over the programme. Joseph Kurian Manissery, Kodethoor Srikantha Udupa and Dr Sannegowda Dhananjaya, three retired professors were felicitated during the programme.
Association of Teachers of KVAFSU President Dr N A Patil, Vice-President Dr E G Jayaraj and General Secretary Dr K Venkata Reddy were present at the programme.
