The tale of the wrath of heavy rains has started all over again in Kodagu district. The rains that took a break during August, facilitating harvest works has started unleashing havoc in the district again. This year heavy rains have caused damage accounting to more than Rs 63 crore.
While the normal rainfall was declared as 2199.20 mm for this year till August end, 2914.83 mm of rainfall was recorded during this period.
Even Madikeri taluk received rainfall above normal. The normal rainfall was set as 2688.40 mm while it recieved a total of 3869 mm.
Virajpet received a sum of 2795.08 mm as against 2125.30 mm normal rainfall. While Somwarpete should have received 1756.90 mm of normal rainfall, it received 2,080.41 mm.
Rain damages for this year in the district has been approximately estimated to be Rs 6,341.59 Lakh.
Over 2,604.10 hectares of cultivable lands have been damaged causing an estimated loss of Rs 194.39 lakh.
About 2,003.05 hectares of land belonging to Horticulture department has faced severe loss, which is estimated to be about Rs 742.11 lakh. Coffee cultivation land of about 1130 hectares has been damaged causing loss of Rs 516 lakh.
Damage of PWD Roads and other buildings have been estimated at Rs 999.20 lakh.
Zilla Panchayat Engineering Department roads, streams, drains and buildings all estimated at a cost of Rs 3,176.35 lakhs have been damaged.
Owing to heavy rains about 1,290 houses have been damaged, 117 houses have been completely damaged causing an estimated loss of Rs 118.55 lakhs.
