With world population exceeding 500 crore in 1987, people across the globe were alarmed about adverse impact of population explosion. Since then, to create awareness World Population Day has been celebrated, explained district surgeon Dr H Pratap Soorya.
He was speaking after the inauguration of World Population Day observance, organised by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, health and information departments at Aruna college of nursing in Tumkur on Monday.
He called upon the public to co-operate in implementing schemes to curb population explosion.
Population, which was 25 crore about 2004 years back, raised to 100 crore in 1,800 AD, said the doctor, adding that today, the world population is around 652 crore. By 2025, the world population may exceed 800 crore.
“Several problems have already cropped up due to the population explosion and hence, to prevent any more harm, we need to take preventive measures now only,” said the doctor.
Youth play vital role in checking the growth of population, by religiously following the family planning programmes, he said.
He advised the youth to adopt birth control plans and not to have child till three years after their wedding.
Education for girls will help in controlling the increase in population, he opined and called for a serious consideration of the problems that future holds for the next generation if the growth rate of population remains the same.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Manojkumar Meena inaugurated the programme. He elaborated on the importance of effective measures to control growth population.
Renuka Paramesh of Rotary, the district and family welfare officer Dr V Aravindappa, Dr K G Raghavendra, H K Dasappa, Dr Muralidhar, Jagadish Mohan were present. District Information officer Tyagarajaiah and K Gurulingaiah compered the programme.
