It is the 7th century and the southern peninsula caught in a bitter war between the Pallavas and Chalukyas. The Bhakti movement is gripping South India and unsettles established creeds and nourishes the growth of vernacular language in every region that it spreads.
But since you and me were not born during this exciting period, Justus Repertory will be in town this weekend to walk us through it with ‘Flame of the Forest’.
Epic novel
Based on the epic novel ‘Sivakamiyin Sapatham’ it narrates the story of the Pallava king, Mahendra’s transformation from a flawed idealist who is a great patron of the arts to the warrior that he forced to become seen through the eyes of his prized artist Sivakami.
However director Gowri Ramnarayan promises that it won’t be a boring history class. “ You don’t even have to be familiar with the events to enjoy it.
The incidents are a recurring theme through all times.
The characters change but the repercussions remain the same. We still see the war and revenge today except that their presentation has changed.”
Strife in the South
Choreographed by the brilliant Priyadarshini Govind (she also performs in the play), the production promises to be a poetry of movement and melody interspersed with poet-saint Appar’s songs.
With rave reviews under its belt, it is showcases the strife of South India that is indeed rare.
It is being staged at Ranga Shankara on September 8 and 9 at 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm on both days. Tickets are available at the venue. For reservations call: 99868-63615.
