Crafts Utsav, an exhibition cum sale of the unique collection of handlooms, handicrafts and jewellery, is on in the City till September 9. The sale features a variety of handlooms and handicrafts such as the super fine and densely woven orissan handlooms. The Odissi silk sarees are heavy and lustrous with a textual sheen. The quality Ikats are well executed examples of the craft. Some rare and indigenious products like vegetable dyed natural cotton dupattas, Ikat worked dupattas with Sapta designs, Bomkai sarees are also available.
The handicrafts sections serves the art lovers with the major crafts of Orissa like stone carvings. These include work on stones ranging from the ultra soft white soap stone (Khadipathara) to black granite (Mugunipathara). The exhibition also features applique work fabrics. Garden umbrellas in sprawling lawns, heart shaped fans, canopies and wall hangings are also prepared out of applique work. Brass casting items like bells, lamp stands, lamps and also idols of gods and goddesses are available.
The sale is organised by ACE to encourage the craftsmen and weavers and also to popularise these crafts. The venue is Hema Chandra Kalyana Mandir, 2nd Block, (near Ashoka Pillar), Jayanagar.
