Three Indians in medal round

India were assured of three medals at the World Cadet Boxing Championships after Vikas Yadav (48kg), Vipin Kumar (50kg) and Umesh Yadav (46kg) on Wednesday advanced to the semifinals at Baku, Azerbaijan, reports PTI from New Delhi.

Vikas won 18-12 against local favourite Mamishzade Elvin and will meet American Louie Byrd in the semifinal. Vipin outpunched Ukrainian Borys Storoznenko 22-7 and will face Sang Min Lee of Korea in the last-four stage.

Umesh entered semifinal with a resounding win over Korean Jung Jin-Gun as he outscored his rival in the second round of the lop-sided bout.

Workshop for technical officials

In their bid to improve the quality of technical officials in the country, the Indian Hockey Federation began a three-day workshop for technical officials on the sidelines of the 7 th Asia Cup hockey here on Wednesday, reports DHNS from Chennai.

The total number of attendees for the technical seminar is 45. "The seminar is being conducted to teach our officials the role of technical officials, umpires' and managers how to go about their respective duties. There will be theory and practical classes as well," said international Grade I hockey umpire Kukoo Walia, also an umpiring manager with the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

French Olympian admits error

France’s 400m hurdles Olympic bronze medallist Naman Keita owned up to a major error of judgement after testing positive for testosterone at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, reports AFP from Paris.

The French Athletics Federation said it would not comment on the positive test until after Keita’s B sample has been analysed.

“I made a huge error. July was a catastrophic month for me in terms of performances and after the French championships, I was suffering a little in my stomach. “I was advised a dietary supplement to help the muscle regenerate and I ordered it off the internet.

Suvarna for  Olympic qualifier

The Federation International De Football Association (FIFA) has appointed Madhav Suvarna as the match referee and the referee assessor for the men’s Olympic qualifying tie between Iraq and Korea to be played in Doha on September 12, reports UNI from Mumbai.

Suvarna has also been appointed as the match commissioner for the Asian Football Confederation Champions league quarter final second leg match between Jeonbuk Hyundai of Korea and Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan in Jeonju in Korea on September 26., a release issued Wednesday stated.

Paradorn eyes a final hurrah

Countless injuries and ten gruelling years on the international tennis circuit have taken their toll on Paradorn Srichaphan, although the Thai insists he is not ready to throw in the towel yet. The 28-year-old, who was rank-ed in the top-ten in 20-03, said, “I know I’ve already reached my best, but it doesn’t mean I ca-nnot do it again. But it’ll be a huge challenge.”
