Get into IT, unions told
The International Trade Union Confederation on Thursday expressed concern over the negative impact globalisation was having on the working classes. Speaking to reporters, ITUC General Secretary Guy Ryder said the hike in national incomes in globalised economies had not reflected in the share of working classes.
Citing violation of rights, unemployment and inadequate remuneration as major issues plaguing workforces, Ryder called for a penetration of trade unions into the IT and knowledge-based sectors to ensure the sectors evolved employee-friendly practices. No sector should be immune to labour laws, he said.
The two-day founding conference of ITUC-Asia Pacific, which concluded on Thursday, hosted more than 300 delegates from 49 countries.
