Thousands of people staged a protest outside Somwarpet Police Station on Thursday demanding the police to arrest the two police officers accused in death case of K R Harish, whose death has raised suspicion.
The family and friends of Harish, a resident of Hanagal and a driver by profession hold the police responsible for the death of Harish and alleged that it was the fatal assault by the police that caused Harish’s death. A protest was staged in Madikeri on Wednesday in this regard.
The body of Harish was brought from Madikeri Hospital to his residence in Hanagal and later burried in Madapur. Later the family, friends and local representatives gathered outside Somwarpet police station demanding arrest of Constable Shrinivas and Head Constable Vishwanath.
Though DySP Rajanna tried to convince the crowd by saying that the two accused police constables have been suspended for not having taken Harish to the Hospital and for keeping him in the station after he met with an accident, the angry crowd did not pay any heed to him.
Zilla Panchayat Member Sanjay Jeevajaya said that since the law is the same for all, the police should be punished.
The Motor Union demanded that Harish’s family must be provided with a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs and his wife Nirmala must be provided a Government employment.
The protestors withdrew their protest after DySP Rajanna informed that four teams of two members each has been formed to trace the missing accused constables. He said that since the matter has reached the IG level, CoD team will be reaching the city on Friday and the accused will be arrested within 48 hours.
MLA Jeevijaya warned the police of an intensified protest if they fail to arrest the accused by 48 hours.
