A cricket match that created history
Sir, Probably no adjective can adequately express the victory of India over England at the Brit Oval stadium in London to level the Natwest series which must have left the spectators spelbound and glued to their seat in a nail biting finish (DH, Sept 6).

This match has created history and will be talked about for a long time. The emergence of Sachin-Ganguly duo has silenced the critics once and for all. They have surpassed  the highest score of 265 of the team playing second.

The five sixers in the last over by Shaw seemed the end of hope for India.

But, the intrepid display of Robin Uthappa coming in  at seven to script an incredible victory has stunned all. He kept his cool under the most unnerving and challenging situation. India has done the magic!

Chak de India!

Fantastic victory
Sir, It was a fantastic victory for India in the 6th one day international. Sachin Tendulakar was rightly declared as “Man of the match” for his fine knock of 94 runs, and his stay alongwith Sourav Ganguly created a fine foundation to chase England’s mammoth total. But the actual man of the match was Robin Uthappa who displayed fine maturity to stay calm scoring 47 runs in 33 balls. He deserves applause .

Plastic ban
Sir, The Kerala Government’s statewide ban on plastic carry bags (DH Editorial, Sept 6.) is commendable. In spite of several Indian state governments banning the use of carry bags, India’s plastic carry bag consumption is one of the highest in the world. Our planet earth is becoming increasingly contaminated. Yet precious little has been done to recycle, re-use and dispose of plastic waste.

Dream performance
Sir, Indians delivered a dream performance on Wednesday to keep the Natwest series against Engaland alive. For the last five matches, India’s fielding was the talk of the time for all the wrong reasons, but on this day, they fielded superbly to sent back as many as three Englishmen short of their crease. As far as batting is concerned, Robin’s last two boundaries are good enough to erase a memory of the last ball six conceded by India at Sharjah. Keep it up!

Govt should interfere
Sir,  Referring to the news report, Venugopal accused of insubordination (DH, Sept 6 ), it shows apathy to a senior doctor as well as to the medical profession which has been made a mess of at the premier institute due to an ego clash between Dr Venugopal and the Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramdoss. When the Minister refused to sign the degree certificates, it gave a strong signal and he did sign it only after a directive from the court. There should be non-interference from the government.

Act of obeisance
Sir, It is reported that an IAS officer of Jharkand fell at the feet of JMM leader Shibu Soren who was cleared of murder charges by the High court. This is a fit case for taking disciplinary action against the officer since it is a clear violation of conduct rules as it is an act unbecoming of a government servant. The act of obeisance goes against the grain of neutrality which the civil services is supposed to maintain. The officers are expected to be committed to the policies of the government in power and not to an individual politician, as has been the case here.
