The doctors of Bihar continue to hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. Bringing bad name to the medical fraternity, a Patna-based doctor has reportedly been found to have left a towel in the womb of a patient while conducting a caesarean operation. This is the third such incident when a doctor in Bihar has left a towel or a scissor in the womb of the patient in the last three months. In the latest instance, one Soni Devi gave birth to a physically-challenged baby after a caesarean operation at Pramila Nursing Home in Agamkuan area of Patna. One and a half months later, Soni complained of acute pain in the operated area. Her relatives took her to the same nursing home, where she was prescribed pills to overcome the pain. But things remained unchanged.Eventually, she was taken to Mother Mary Hospital, where, after an X-ray, it was detected that a small towel, used to clean the blood-stains, was lying in her womb.
On Thursday, Dr PK Bhaskar successfully removed the towel after an hour-long operation. In August last, a patient was found carrying a scissor in her stomach.
President of the Bihar unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Dr Basant Singh termed Thursday’s incident as a “human error” and said that a Medical Council of India (MCI) team should investigate such cases. “If the doctors are found guilty, their registration should be cancelled,” he said.
