BIANCA GOES
*Sudha Narayanan
"I have always wondered why do people abandon their pets? Would they do that to their children? "

Bianca was lost. Well and truly lost. She didn't know where she was and couldn't find her way  home. So she sat by the side of the road terrified, and watched the traffic whizzing past her. She had never been on such a busy road all by herself. Her family would never let her go out of the gate alone. She was only allowed to play in the garden and bark at the other dogs through the gate. She had such a lovely, comfortable life with her family all these 7 years. They had given her so much love and she in turn adored them. Then why did they do this? Why did they take her in the car yesterday afternoon, drive to this strange area, slow down the car and just push her out? Why did they speed away even before she could get back on her feet?

Why didn't they love her anymore? Was it because she stole a biscuit from the other dog? Or was it because she chewed Mamma's slipper? Bewildered Bianca sat by the side of the road, tears rolling down her cheeks………..
Bianca, a 7 year old Pomeran-ian, was found wandering on the busy streets of Whitefield, starving and tired, by Mrs. Vanita Mirchandain.

When she found her, she was suffering from an illness called Vaginal Prolapse which is probably the reason her entire family abandoned her on the roads. Mrs. Vanita rushed her to the CUPA Shelter and into the safe hands of Dr. Lohith and his team. For one month, they gave her the best possible medical aid and the Shelter staff took very good care of her. And when it was time to go home, Mrs. Vanita took her home and gave an advertisement in the local newspapers for a permanent home for Bianca. Two days later, an angel in the form of Mrs. Kelly Kuri came to see her and it was love at first sight! Kelly scooped Bianca into her arms and kissed her soundly. Bianca flew to USA on June 20th with her Kelly Mamma to a life that probably no dog in India could ever dream about! Before leaving, she sent Dr. Lohith and his team a beautiful Thank You letter and Kiss!

All abandoned dogs do not get a fairy tale ending like Bianca. Many of them are so badly bruised or psychologically stressed out that they can never be rehabitated or adopted. Some of them have been beaten and kicked and tortured so much that it takes months before the wounds can heal. And what about the wounds that survive in the mind? They never really heal. It takes super human efforts from all of us at the Shelter to win back the love and trust of those beautiful creatures.

I have always wondered why do people abandon their pets? Would they do that to their children? How would you feel if you woke up one morning and found out that your parents don't love you anymore and that they were planning to leave you out on the streets with no clothes, food, nothing! Dogs feel the same as we do, maybe even more. If your know anyone at school, college or in your area who doesn't want their dog anymore, convince them to give the dog a second chance. Take the help of CUPA to advice and counsel them on keeping the dog with them and if that also fails, do not allow them to dump the dog on the road. Bring it to any of the animal shelters in Bangalore. As future citizens of India, this is one role that you must play.
