Introduction of buses to airport a good decision
Sir, The Bangalore Metropolitan Municipal Transport Corporation (BMTC) must be applauded for their pro-active proposal of introducing Volvo buses to connect Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli with the city areas.
The airport is fast nearing completion and when it opens as scheduled in April 2008, citizens travelling to the airport are going to face real problems - high cost and travel time, if the present connectivity is not
improved.
BMTC proposal to run Volvo buses merits immediate sanction. What is suggested is that BMTC must run Volvo buses from all its depots at an average frequency to a trip of every 10-15 minutes. The route should cover premium hotels and a few pick up and drop stations.
Bus depots may act as nodal points with parking facility for private vehicles. BMTC should plan service schedules as per requirement and cater to the total demand of passengers and relatives who wish to go to the airport to receive or send off
people.

Traffic management
Sir, It is gratifying to note that the traffic police are thinking on effective traffic management. The Inspector General and additional commissioner of police have rightly stated that the key issues of the city are inadequate parking space. To overcome this, there is no other alternative but to construct multistorey parking spaces with ramps at all the shopping complexes as well as cinema halls and big bazaars. This will automatically reduce most of the congestion on city roads.

China tour of MLA’s
Sir, The recent tour of our state legislators to China makes us wonder was it necessary to undertake the foreign tour at this time when the state is reeling under flood havoc costing the government exchequer dearly.
The reason given to their tour is to make our legislators understand and get educated on the development that has taken place in China and to implement the same back home. What we would like to know is when most of our legislators have failed to understand people’s problems in their respective constituencies, will this tour help?

No punishment
Sir, I was shocked to read the Primary and Secondary Education Minister Horatti's remarks, “No teacher will dare to take any initiative in correcting a child”, (DH, Sept 6).
I have been a teacher since 1983. In every institution that I worked in, it was clearly understood that corporal punishment is never to be used in punishing children.
It is one of the first duties of a teacher to see that a child is not harmed in any way. Punishment can be given in several ways, by detention, extra tasks or even by deducting marks.

We need Sachin
Sir, Sachin fans, all over India, were highly perturbed on Thursday night when some news channels announced Sachin “might” retire from the shorter version of cricket after the Lords match. A few channels told the people “Sachin will retire after the series against Australia and Pakistan”.
They conducted extensive reviews and interviews. But, cricket-lovers in India heaved a sigh of relief when the very same channels carried the little champion's denial of the rumours.
Sachin Tendulkar is in pristine form in recent times. His 94 at the Oval was enough to kep his detractors at bay.
