England middle-order batsman Owais Shah, who scored a superb hundred in the sixth one-day at the Oval against India, said on Friday that he had always backed his ability to score runs at the top-level cricket.
"I would like to think I could get runs at the top level. I never questioned my ability. It was just a matter of getting in the side. Once you're settling in the side you can play that way," Shah said.
"Everyone doubts everyone. There will be doubters. I'm sure there are some here. It's one man's opinion against another," he added.
Better effort
Shah also rated Luke Wright's half-century better than his effort. "It was a different position when I came to the crease. Luke Wright played a better innings than mine just in the context of the game. He counter-punched when they would have expected us to go into defensive mode," he said.
"I was just disappointed that he got out. We know how dangerous he is when he gets going. I was disappointed that we were just getting the partnership going and it would have been nice for him to fire. I knew what I could do," he said.
Shah, however, said he still had to go a long way before cementing his place in the side. "I'm in the one-day squad and it doesn't change. Unlike Tests when it's picked every week. I don't think I've nailed it, but it's about judging people over 2-3 series. Cement your spot, see how it goes for 5-6 games," he said.
Shah was also happy that he got the prized wicket of Rahul Dravid with his part time off-spin. "I am very, very happy. I've been bowling in the nets. It turned and I was desperate to bowl. Luckily got one to turn and got the great man."
