Rajasthan mishap: 85 bodies found
DH News Service, Jaipur:
Bodies of the 85 pilgrims killed when the truck carrying them fell into a gorge near Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, have been retrieved after a 4-hour-long rescue operation on Saturday.

In what could be called the worst accident in the history of Rajasthan, the pilgrims travelling in an overcrowded truck met the accident around 8 pm on Friday. The passengers of the ill-fated vehicle were on their way to attend the annual Ramdeora fair in Jaisalmer, police sources said from Udaipur.
The truck fell into a 40 ft gorge called Desuri ka Naal in Desuri, about 150 km from Udaipur when the driver reportedly lost control of the overcrowded vehicle and smashed through a wall, the IG police, Udaipur range Rajeev Dasot said.
Injured in hospital
Timely action helped rescue the injured who were immediately shifted to various hospitals in Rajsamand, Pali and Udaipur districts, he added.
“All the dead bodies were handed over to the families by 5 am and we decided to do away with the formality of post-mortem since the cause of death was so obvious,” he said.
At least 82 dead bodies have been identified, he said.  Those being treated in the hospitals are out of danger, he said.
Probe ordered
While a divisional commissioner-level probe has been ordered to inquire into the accident occurring due to obvious violation of transport rules, the state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased.
Chief minister Vasundhara Raje accompanied by DGP A S  Gill and home secretary V S  Singh visited Rajsamand on Saturday and inspected the accident site from a helicopter.
She visited the state hospital in Rajsamand where the victims of the road mishap are being treated and also consoled the bereaved families in Simal and Madri villages.
Almost three-fourth of the victims were from these two villages. Home minister Gulab Chand Kataria also reached Rajsamand to console the bereaved families.
