Sugar units won’t pay more
Owners of sugar factories on Saturday refused to give additional Rs 160 per tonne of sugar cane to farmers, as suggested by the government.
With this development, the ongoing tussle between factory owners and sugar cane growers may not be solved in the near future.
Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao held a meeting with the representatives of the factories at Vidhana Soudha this evening.
The owners expressed their inability to pay additional money, as the prices of sugar at international market has crashed. Even paying Rs 100 would not be possible, they owners reportedly told the government at the meeting.
Bheemanna Khandre, who participated in the meeting, told reporters that the factories were neither under loss, nor were they making a profit. “It is not possible to pay additional Rs 160 per tonne. The same has been conveyed to the government,” he added.
Sudhakar Rao said the government had requested owners to pay the additional money, but owners have also conveyed their problems.
