Kannadigas show MES the door
Belgaum, dhns:
Pro-Kannada candidates have put up a good show against MES-supported candidates in the Belgaum City Corporation elections as the contest was neck and neck in many of the total 58 wards. After announcement of results for 57 wards, 27 candidates elected were from pro-Kannada groups, 20 pro-Marathi, including pro-MES, and 10 Independents.

The process of counting of ballots continued late on Sunday. For the first time in the history of Belgaum corporation, pro-Kannada candidates have put up such an impressive show. The MES, which ruled the roost since the inception of corporation in 1984, has suffered humiliation. All pro-Kannada candidates were fielded by Sarva Paksha Sarva Bhashik Samiti, which was formed by pro-Kannada leaders in Belgaum a few weeks prior to elections. The samiti was formed with an objective to topple MES.

On the other side, the Congress had done well in the district bagging seven local out of the 16 local bodies, while JDS won four and BJP two. Though BJP has eight MLAs and two MPs in the district, the party suffered humiliation in the district.
